In this post I'm going to reveal an advanced SEO technique for ecommerce websites concerning pagination issues. For the purpose of this post, I will assume you have a working knowledge of SEO and are working on an ecommerce website.
The Setup:
Ecommerce websites usually have hundreds of products in a category, so they display 10-20 products per page, and provide additional pages for viewing (you can click on page 2- page xx) as well as a 'view all' page.
The Problem:
Each of these additional pages and the 'view all' page is a duplicate of page 1, since it contains the same title tags and short text. This creates a duplicate content and indexation challenge.
Its fascinating how many ecommerce sites (even with good SEO's working on them) do not have a solution.
The Solution:
There are a few options: rel canonical, robots meta noindex, parameter handling, or making pages unique (URL, title, meta description).
I've found using a meta noindex tag in the secondary and 'View All' pages is the best solution. Here are the steps:
Create a view all page with all items listed.
Link to the view all from categories, pages and individual items. (This is default on CMS's like Magento, or there is usually at least an option for it).
Now for the fun part: meta noindex the view all and secondary product pages. Make noindex, follow the default command.
Here is ...

After we optimize a client’s website from an on-page SEO standpoint, our next step is to take advantage of their top pages that are either 301 redirected or restricted by robots.
To get started, go to the Open Site Explorer powered by SEOmoz’s link scape index, enter your domain and then click ‘Get Link Data’. For our example, we are using www.staples.com as the domain. After the page loads, click the ‘Top Pages’ tab and you should see the following:
Your next step is to ‘Export to CSV’ the results of the ‘Top Pages’ tab. (see red circle above). After you download the CSV, open it up in Excel and let’s start getting to work.
First step is to prune your list. We are looking for any pages in the top 20 that are blocked by robots.txt or are HTTP Status 301/302 redirects or 404 errors. In this case, there are 4 solid candidates that we have identified as being prime candidates for removing the 301 redirects, adding some solid content to the pages and then adding some quality internal links.
Make sure you’ve got real pages at these URLs now with real valuable content. That will let you funnel a lot more authority back to your site than a 301 redirect any day of the week.
That means to remove the following 301 redirects:

Internet marketing can get overwhelming with all of the strategies that are out there. SEO. PPC. Social media. A/B split testing. Online lead generation. E-mail marketing. Blogging. Twitter. If you're trying to market your business online, where do you start? And where do you spend your time?
Today I'm going to break down Internet marketing into a very simple 3-step process for you. This process sheds away all of the extraneous strategies and tactics, and gets down to the core of what you're really trying to do. Simplicity is the root of genius, right?
To generate business online, here is really all you have to do:
Step 1: Create a Web Property.
By creating a web property -- whether it's a website, blog, Facebook fan page, etc. -- you're in the game. Granted, if you have the ugliest site in the world, it may not convert too well (which I'll discuss more in Step 3), but at least, you have a chance of generating more business online.
Step 2: Drive Traffic to It.
Once you have your web property created, you're not going to make you any money unless people actually visit your site... so you have to drive traffic to it. You could have the most beautiful website in the ...
Two Reasons that +1 Will End Up Next to Buzz in the Google Social Media Graveyard
Note: This is the opinion of Highly Relevant, an Internet Marketing Company in Los Angeles.
Anytime Google launches a new service, the Internet is alive with speculation on how it will affect SEO and the Internet in general.
I want to be the first to predict that the new “+1” feature will be another failure for Google in the “social space” because of two fundamental problems:
Problem #1: Launch Strategy
The first issue is the launch strategy. Since the “+1” button for websites will not be available for several “months not weeks”, users are left to “+1” content in search results.
I cannot remember a time when I thought to myself, “That is a fantastic Meta description. I like this site already!” Do they really expect me to return to the search results after making that decision to show my approval?
I don’t think so. Something else interesting has already popped up on Twitter or another one of my social networks, and I am on my way over there.
People do not have that kind of Internet attention span. In the months that it takes to get the +1 button out to webmasters, the Google social “haters” (apparently myself included) will be piling on about another colossal social failure by Google, making the release of the button ...
Today Google announced its latest and greatest push into the social space with +1. Similar to the Facebook “Like”, this feature will allow searchers to “+1” search results that they like or find useful. The feature is currently in Google “labs,” but you can start using it today.
Here’s how you can get started with +1-ing search results:
Log into your Google account, go to http://www.google.com/experimental/ and click “Join This Experiment” (next to the +1 Experiment). At this point, the feature will be activated in your search results when you are logged into your Google account.
+1 buttons will be available to put on websites, next to the Facebook “Like” and Twitter “Tweet“ buttons in a few weeks.
It is too early to tell if – and exactly how – this new feature will impact the search results. My speculation is that in the short term, +1-ing a site (someone needs to come up with a good verb for this feature) will only affect your personal search results. In the long term, however, +1 will likely have a far-reaching impact on SEO (assuming that it’s much more successful than Google Buzz).
What is certain is that +1 represents the most definitive social media and SEO mash-up to date.
Why it will not be successful... Google + 1 = Fail.
